Los Angeles Far Ahead of Nation in Recycling

The city kept about 47% of its municipal refuse out of landfills and incinerators last year, compared to a U.S. rate of 28%, officials said Monday.

Nevertheless, Rick Best, president of the GrassRoots Recycling Network, said more needs to be done, adding that recycling efforts have reached a plateau over the past few years.

“I think we’ve gotten a lot of the easy materials,” he said. “And now we’re starting to go after some of the more difficult or more costly products to recycle.”

Councilwoman Ruth Galanter said she will request that the council consider a resolution today urging soft-drink bottlers to use more recycled plastic.
