Information on Inmates to Be Available on Web

The Sheriff’s Department automated its jail information system so that anyone with access to the Internet can review inmates’ arrest and other related records, officials said Thursday.

The Inmate Information Center, https://www.lasd.org, includes data on about 20,000 inmates arrested by the Sheriff’s Department, the Los Angeles Police Department and the majority of other municipal agencies around the county.

It also includes data on about 2,400 inmates participating in the program that includes work release and electronic monitoring.

The inmate information includes booking numbers, dates of birth, charges, bail amounts, court dates and other public information. It is updated hourly, sheriff’s officials said.

The information site now is receiving 300 to 400 hits a day and “no one even knows about it yet,” said Capt. Garry Leonard , a Sheriff’s Department spokesman. “We think it will save us a couple hundred calls a day from bail bondsmen and attorneys alone.”

Members of the public still can call the Inmate Information Center answering service at (213) 473-6100, or other sheriff’s facilities, for similar information.

The site also is assisting government agencies that provide such assistance as food stamps, Social Security and other benefits. Those agencies now can more quickly eliminate or restore benefits, depending on inmates’ status.
