American composer John Harbison has been named a UCI Chancellor’s Distinguished Fellow and will be in residence in the department of music, May 16-19. Harbison’s opera, “The Great Gatsby,” based on F. Scott Fitzgerald’s 1924 novel, received its premiere in December at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, which commissioned it to mark the 25th anniversary of James Levine’s tenure as music director.
During his residency, Harbison will conduct master classes. He will also lecture on “Gatsby,” at noon May 18 in the Winifred Smith Hall on campus. Admission is free. Information: (949) 824-7844. The Fullerton Academy of the Arts will be among nearly 30 Southern California schools singing in the 11th Annual Los Angeles Master Chorale High School Choir Festival from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Friday in the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, 135 N. Grand Ave. The academy was established in 1996 by program director Scott Hedgecock under the auspices of Fullerton High School.
