A representative from Southern California Edison met with members of the local chapter of the Surfrider Foundation on Wednesday to discuss environmental issues and the decommissioning of a power unit at the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station. Ray Golden, a Southern California Edison spokesman for the power plant, discussed topics such as building an artificial reef to stimulate kelp growth.
Golden said the artificial reef project has begun in experimental stages and that an evaluation would be done by marine biology consultants in about five years.
In addition, the federal government is looking for a location to store used nuclear fuel during the decommissioning of a power unit that was closed in 1992, he said. The plant is currently operating two power units.
