Police Storm Prison as Rioting Worsens
From Times Wire Reports
Yugoslav police stormed a prison in Nis to try to contain a hunger strike-turned-riot as inmates burned cells and took to rooftops after chasing off guards. Inmates, alleging they had been beaten “like horses,” were demanding that their sentences be cut by 30% and that prison management be replaced. The unrest began when Serbs demanded to be included in a proposed amnesty for Kosovo Albanians.
