* Dr. Eugene M. Farber; Researched Psoriasis

Dr. Eugene M. Farber, 83, a dermatologist who did influential work in the field of psoriasis. Born in Buffalo, N.Y., Farber graduated from Oberlin College before earning his medical degree at the University of Buffalo. As a resident at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., he focused on skin disease and syphilis. His later research showed the effectiveness of Benadryl, the first antihistamine. He joined Stanford University’s medical school in 1948, became director of the division of dermatology in 1950 and chairman of the department of dermatology in 1959. He served in that position until his retirement in 1986. In 1971, he organized the First International Symposium on Psoriasis, held at Stanford. He co-founded the Psoriasis Research Institute in Palo Alto and served as the institute’s president and chief investigator until his death. A prolific writer, Farber published more than 200 scientific articles on psoriasis and other skin diseases. He was the coauthor of the 1997 book “Conquering Psoriasis.” On Nov. 10 in Palo Alto of a brain tumor.
