Support for the Arts

Re “Art Needs Support, Not Dilution,” Valley Edition Editorials, and “Secession’s Impact,” Letters to the Valley Edition, Sept. 17.

It’s a bit late in the day for the downtown cultural mavens to begin lamenting the competition for arts dollars. As a retired Valleyite living on an average income, I can no longer afford to attend cultural events in Los Angeles. The cultural powers that be have priced Staples Center and Music Center tickets and parking out of my price range.

This culture vulture supports our own New San Fernando Valley Symphony Assn. as well as the El Portal Center for the Arts, which just completed an impressive first season of delightful theater.

Since when does growing increasing cultural venues and companies water down the arts? Making more artistic experiences available to more people in more income levels surely is a worthwhile goal.
