Lukashenko Foes Threaten Boycott

Several thousand Belarussian opposition activists marched through the capital, Minsk, threatening to boycott parliamentary elections to protest political repression. Most opposition candidates were barred from running in the Oct. 15 vote on technicalities, and some opposition parties have been banned. Authoritarian President Alexander G. Lukashenko dissolved the previous, opposition-led legislature in 1996 and replaced it with a body of supporters.
