Five women who helped create a “more just and equitable society” will be honored Saturday at a fund-raising event sponsored by Cal State Northridge’s Women’s Studies Department.

Proceeds from the biennial Phenomenal Women Awards reception and silent auction will help faculty, students, scholarships and the CSUN Women’s Center, a student-run community referral service.

This year’s honorees are Aliza A. Lifshitz, health reporter for Univision TV Network and medical editor of a Spanish-language news magazine; Jean Bruce Poole, historic museum director at El Pueblo de Los Angeles Historical Monument; Wakako Yamauchi, who has written stories and produced plays examining the pre-World War II experiences of Japanese Americans; Bettina Aptheker, UC Santa Cruz Women’s Studies Department chairwoman; and singer-songwriter Rosa Martha Zarate-Macias.
