Beall Center Set to Open With A Bang

UC Irvine School of the Arts will unveil its new media arts facility Oct. 17 with plenty of lights, sound, motion--and a joystick.
The Donald R. and Joan F. Beall Center for Art and Technology is a 3,300-square-foot gallery and research center dedicated to digital technologies and the arts.
The facility built from a $1.5-million gift from Rockwell, will enable experts in different professions to collaborate on experimental multimedia art projects.
The inaugural exhibition at the center, titled “Shift-Ctrl: Computers, Games and Art,” is an interactive exhibition featuring artists from the United States and around the world.
The project, taking place in the Beall Center and on the Internet, includes computer games, artist-designed games and artists’ game-like works.
One gallery offers 13 computer stations where visitors can play popular computer games or experience the show in six rooms, each with a joystick on a pedestal in the center and a large screen projector.
