* Ivax Corp. sued Bristol-Myers Squibb Co. and American BioScience Inc., alleging they illegally blocked generic competition to Bristol-Myers’ cancer treatment drug Taxol. The suit opens a new front in the legal battle over Ivax’s effort to begin marketing its generic version of Taxol. The companies already are tangled in litigation in California, Washington and New York. The suit, filed in a Florida circuit court, alleges Bristol-Myers and Santa Monica-based American BioScience violated the state’s antitrust and unfair trade practices laws and have committed fraud. Officials at Bristol-Myers and American BioScience called the allegations unfounded.

* Weider Nutrition International Inc., maker of Tiger’s Milk nutrition bars, agreed to pay $400,000 to settle Federal Trade Commission charges it made unsubstantiated claims in its ads for herbal diet supplements. Weider’s advertisements claimed its PhenCal and PhenCal 106 were proved to cause weight loss and to prevent the regaining of lost weight, the FTC said. Salt Lake City-based Weider couldn’t be reached immediately for comment. The company is majority owned by Weider Health & Fitness, publisher of such magazines as Muscle & Fitness.
