Arts at CSUN Deserve Support

Cal State Northridge is doing its best to retire the old joke about the San Fernando Valley and culture--as in not.

CSUN in 1999 established a new unit, the Center for the Visual and Performing Arts, to bring the university’s myriad cultural offerings under one umbrella and make them more accessible to the public. As part of that effort, CSUN earlier this year for the first time produced a handsome brochure that described its visual and performing arts offerings for the spring season.

The fall 2000 brochure is now out and it, too, promises plenty to stimulate Valley imaginations.

This month alone, chamber music lovers can enjoy an Oct. 16 performance by the Talich String Quartet of Prague, world music fans can see Chilean folk musicians Inti-Illimani on Oct. 25 and musical theater aficionados can enjoy “Unforgettable: The Nat King Cole Story” on Oct. 29. The fall season also includes dance and art exhibits as well as additional theater and musical offerings.

In addition to listing events, the brochure includes directions to campus, maps of venues and a guide to parking.

CSUN’s Performing Arts Center is one way the university fulfills its obligation to serve its community. The community, in turn, needs to do its part to support this center of culture in the Valley.
