Balkan Program Admits Yugoslavia
Yugoslavia was admitted into an international Balkan development program, opening the door to further multinational support for new President Vojislav Kostunica’s efforts to foster democracy. The German head of the Balkans Stability Pact, Bodo Hombach, handed Kostunica ally Goran Svilanovic a large key symbolizing Yugoslavia’s full membership in the group at a meeting in Bucharest, Romania. Yugoslavia had been excluded from the organization, which provides economic support to nations of southeastern Europe, because of the policies of former President Slobodan Milosevic.
