Vote Yes on Prop. A
Re “County Reform: Prop. A Is No Answer,” editorial, Oct. 19:
The League of Women Voters of L.A. County is backing Prop. A on the November ballot, to get the reform ball rolling. In 1992, The Times joined the League of Women Voters in support of two county ballot reform measures that would have created nine supervisorial districts within the county and called for an elected chief executive officer. Both measures failed.
A new approach--one reform at a time--is now offered the voters. With the passage of Prop. A, the 10 million residents of this county will be allowed to elect nine supervisors, not just five, who will listen to their concerns, respond to their needs and represent their diversity. Prop. A is a start, but it is not the full answer to effective leadership within L.A. County. We join The Times in supporting separation of executive powers from the legislative functions of the Board of Supervisors. We want to work for the appointment of a commission to study and recommend reforms needed to assure checks and balances as well as accountable executive leadership.
It may be that the voters need this two-step reform process to fully understand how they will benefit. Yes, the league supports Prop. A and urges informed citizens to vote yes on A.
