Thomas Howard James, 87, key researcher in photographic techniques, including film development. James began working for Eastman Kodak Co. in 1936 and was its research scientist for 42 years. Internationally recognized for his contributions, James researched the development of photographic film, latent image effects and chemical and spectral sensitization. A holder of numerous patents, James taught photographic theory at Rochester, N.Y., universities and wrote about 150 scientific papers. He also wrote and edited books on photographic theory and edited Photographic Science and Engineering magazine for more than a decade. He earned the Progress Medal and the Henderson Medal from the Royal Photographic Society of Great Britain, the Davanne Medal from the Societe Francaise de Photographie and the Lieven-Gevaert Medal from the Society of Photographic Scientists and Engineers. On Aug. 24 in Rochester, after a brief illness.
