Microsoft Corp.’s executive in charge of the software maker’s flagship Windows products, Group Vice President Paul Maritz, resigned unexpectedly, the company said. Maritz, 45, who had worked at Microsoft for 14 years and reported directly to Chief Executive Steve Ballmer, is stepping down for unspecified “personal reasons” a company spokeswoman said. Maritz is the latest in a stream of senior executives who have left the world’s largest software maker as its growth slows and it faces the possibility of a court-ordered breakup for antitrust violations.

“I understand Paul’s decision--for personal reasons and after nearly 14 years at Microsoft--to do some of the other things in his life that he’d like to do,” Ballmer said in a statement. Maritz wasn’t available for comment. Microsoft shares closed up 13 cents at $68.25, before the announcement was made.
