The Planning Commission unanimously voted last week to adopt an ordinance that streamlines the application process and standardizes requirements for companies that install cellular antennas on poles.

City planners expect to present the ordinance to the council before its Oct. 4 meeting. The new rules would lift a moratorium on cellular antennas the city imposed in June.

Cellular phone antennas have been proliferating throughout the region, said Planning Director Brian Fisk, adding that the city has received at least 10 applications in the last year.

Fisk said other cities are adopting similar regulations.

Antennas would not be allowed in single-family residential areas and would be required to be fully screened if they’re installed on top of buildings.
