Japan’s Takimoto Surprises the Field

Makoto Takimoto of Japan surprised the field and won the gold medal in men’s 81-kilogram judo Tuesday night at Sydney.
Takimoto defeated Cho In-chul of South Korea in the gold medal match after earlier upsetting Ruslan Seilkhanov of Kazakstan, Gaston Garcia of Argentina and Alvaro Paseyro of Uruguay.
Aleksei Budolin of Estonia and Nuno Delgado of Portugal shared the bronze.
Severine Vandenhende of France defeated Li Shufang of China to win the gold medal in women’s 63-kilogram judo. Jung Sung-sook of South Korea and Gella Vandecaveye of Belgium shared the bronze medal.
Jason Morris, the 1992 silver medalist from Scotia, N.Y., lost to Australian Daniel Kelly in the second round.
