Germans Win in Team Pursuit
The Germans won the gold medal Tuesday night at Sydney in the 4,000-meter men’s team pursuit, beating Ukraine and breaking the world record the Ukrainians had set earlier in the semifinals.
The German team of Guido Fulst, Robert Bartko, Daniel Becke and Jens Lehmann finished in 3 minutes 59.710 seconds, eclipsing the world record of 4:00.830 that the Ukrainians had set about one hour earlier.
Britain won the bronze medal race in 4:01.979.
In the sprint events, Marty Nothstein of Trexlertown, Pa., advanced to today’s semifinals after beating Craig MacLean of Britain in two races. In quarterfinals, riders race in a best-of-three format.
Marcelo Arrue of Woodland Hills placed 11th after riding third in the race that determines the final placing for the tournament-style match sprint. He was eliminated from medal contention Monday night.
