Argentina’s hopes of sealing victory and confirming a ticket into the next round were dashed by a 1-0 loss against Spain.

The first half was uneventful, with both teams playing conservatively. Argentina came on strongly in the second half and dominated play, but the players were unable to capitalize on shots at goal. Spain scored with Erdoitza Goikoetxea’s conversion of a penalty corner in the 40th minute.

Earlier, a controversial umpiring decision helped fire up New Zealand to a 1-0 victory over South Africa.

The contentious call came in the 45th minute when umpire Judith Barnesby disallowed what appeared to be a legitimate goal by New Zealand.

A long pass came into the circle and the ball was apparently deflected into the net, but Barnesby ruled there was no touch.
