First, it was Susie O’Neill, then Kieren Perkins and, finally, the Woodies, Mark Woodforde and Todd Woodbridge.

Being an Aussie sporting icon hasn’t been easy lately at the Olympics. A country aching for a dream send-off was denied for the third time as the Canadian doubles team of Sebastien Lareau and Daniel Nestor defeated Woodforde and Woodbridge, 5-7, 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 (2), in the gold-medal match on Wednesday.

Woodforde, 34, is retiring soon, and the last tennis match with his longtime doubles partner ended on a down note.
