‘My Heart Broke’

* My heart broke as I read the disgusting accusations of abuse of 7-month-old baby Kara Sheppard, leveled at the “acquaintances” of Lisa Sheppard (“Infant Girl Clings to Life in Abuse Case,” April 1). I can’t remember a local story that has affected me so profoundly, and unfortunately this incident is not as isolated as people might think.

As the father of three beautiful children, I thank God on a daily basis that I have the golden opportunity to experience the kind of love I have for my kids. The accused, if in fact they are found guilty, will not be given the proper “sentencing” they deserve in this lifetime. Their punishment must come from a higher place. I suppose if there is any good to come out of this (and believe me, that is a difficult perspective), Kara and her big sister will be adopted by a loving couple who deserve the love these babies have to offer them.
