Thousands of people were evacuated from Schiphol Airport here Sunday after a deep fryer caught fire at a Burger King in the passenger terminal.

Firefighters said the fryer at the Burger King--billed by the company as its busiest outlet in the world--overheated. Workers said they scrambled over the counter and ran when they heard what sounded like an explosion in the kitchen about 3:30 p.m.

Fire Chief Pieter Heere said no one was hurt, but police said one person was treated for smoke inhalation.

A burst of flame traveled through the kitchen’s ventilation shaft to the roof, where it was visible from outside, prompting an erroneous report on Dutch TV that the building had caught fire.

Incoming and outgoing flights were delayed, and passengers were evacuated from one of the airport’s three terminals. Traffic was halted on highways leading to the airport, one of Europe’s busiest.

After the fire was contained, the airport was reopened, and officials said flight schedules had returned to normal by about 7:45 p.m.
