The article claiming that the newly signed teachers’ contract would cause the LAUSD to suffer a deficit was page [B1] news (“Teachers’ 3-Year, 15% Raise Leaves LAUSD in Debt,” Feb. 28). The new article (inner pages of section B) which reveals that the financial outlook has brightened and that the new projected “deficit” of $81 million (instead of $126 million) will in fact be covered by last year’s “carry-over” of $606 million (money not spent last year but available) doesn’t rate the same treatment by The Times (“L.A. Unified to Reduce Deficit, Cover Teachers’ Raises,” March 21, page B2). The Times reveals its anti-teacher bias by not presenting the banner headline “District Can Afford to Pay Teachers Even More Than They Planned!” on the front page.
