A man who authorities say transmitted the AIDS virus through unprotected sex with at least five women has pleaded guilty to charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

Lawyers say it is the first time in Texas that a person has been charged with knowingly transmitting HIV during consensual sex.

Paul Leslie Hollingsworth, 46, was sentenced to nine months of probation. Prosecutors said he got a short sentence because he is in the advanced stages of AIDS and likely won’t live long enough to face trial.

Hollingsworth’s lawyer, David Frank, said his client did not admit to intentionally transmitting the virus. “These were two adults having consensual heterosexual sex,” he said.
