Apology to China
I was very pleased to see that the simple phrase “very sorry” expressed by the U.S. government led to the release of the 24 Americans being held by the Chinese (April 12). However, I wish the same U.S. government would say it is “very sorry” about the way the Chinese treat their own people.
We heard no expressions of sorrow when dozens of children were killed in an explosion in a Chinese elementary school where students were forced to work making firecrackers in order to pay for their education. There is little outrage at the fact that hundreds of members of the Falun Gong have been arrested for practicing their religion. And, little is said about the political prisoners forced to produce goods that often make their way into the United States. I guess billions of dollars in trade means “never having to say you’re sorry.”
