Power to the People

I’m so glad Brian Lowry took the time to pour water on the fires of those of us who are trying to show the nation that there are many far better things to do than watch television (“Turn Off the Set? Not If Media Can Help It,” April 18). According to Lowry, ours is an uphill battle we have little chance of winning.

I only wish he were writing a column when I was marching against the Vietnam War for which both William Westmoreland and Robert McNamara now express regret. At the time, we were told we’d never succeed. And I wish he were around at the time we were urging an end to racism, long before a black man was appointed to the Supreme Court or was elected mayor of a large city. Had he been writing, he could have saved us all a lot of time and trouble, for we were told then that this was an impossible dream.

The truth is that the no-TV movement is growing dramatically and will one day make a significant difference in the lives of our children. And thanks to Lowry, I have a new definition of the movement’s success. It will be the day he is reassigned to another desk for lack of interest in his subject.
