Falun Gong Members March in Chinatown
About 500 Falun Gong followers marched through New York’s Chinatown section to commemorate fellow supporters they say have died at the hands of the Chinese government.
The march also drew a number of counterdemonstrators who shouted slogans against Falun Gong, which China has banned.
Tuesday marks the second anniversary of the gathering of about 10,000 Falun Gong practitioners at Zhongnanhai, the leadership compound in Beijing, that led to the group being banned in July 1999. Falun Gong combines meditation and exercise with a doctrine loosely based on Buddhist and Taoist teachings.
