Jury selection in the trial of a former white supremacist accused of killing four black girls in the 1963 bombing of a Birmingham church ended, setting the stage for opening arguments in the civil rights-era case.

Circuit Judge James Garrett said 16 jurors, including four alternates, had been selected to hear the murder case against ex-Ku Klux Klansman Thomas Blanton Jr.

Lawyers said prosecutors likely would begin presenting their case against Blanton today.

Blanton, 62, is believed to be one of the men responsible for planting the dynamite that exploded Sept. 15, 1963, under a stairwell of the 16th Street Baptist Church.
