An Israeli was killed in a shooting attack Saturday in northern Israel, and a Palestinian activist died in Israeli army fire in the West Bank. The casualties occurred on the eve of Israeli Foreign Minister Shimon Peres’ planned trip to Egypt and Jordan to discuss an Arab plan to end the violence.

In the Gaza Strip, five Israeli youths were injured by a mortar attack on a Jewish settlement. Israel blamed Yasser Arafat’s Palestinian Authority and vowed retaliation.

Palestinian security officials said Israel fired tank shells Saturday night at Palestinian police positions at two points in the Gaza Strip, injuring two Palestinians near Khan Yunis. A third shell targeted a police station in the Beitunia area of the West Bank, they said.

The Israeli army denied firing tank shells at any of the three areas but said there were exchanges of fire at each point.

Near the Arab Israeli city of Umm al Fahm, about three miles from the West Bank, an Israeli family returning home Saturday came under fire from a passing car, Israeli radio said. Shots killed the father and wounded his wife, police said.

In the West Bank city of Bethlehem, an activist from Arafat’s Fatah party, Eymad Karakeh, 34, was killed when soldiers shot at his vehicle, witnesses said.
