John Lumsden; Expert in Workplace Health Had Key Invention
John Cooper Lumsden, 78, co-inventor of the device used to measure dust particles in industrial settings, died Friday in Raleigh, N.C., after a long battle with esophageal cancer.
Lumsden was the co-inventor of the Lumsden-Lynch Vertical Elutriator, which became the federal standard for measuring dust particles.
He was the former head of the Occupational Health branch of the North Carolina Division of Health Services and was on the State Board of Refrigeration Examiners from 1958-1978. He also served on various state occupational health boards and committees.
Lumsden earned the Distinguished Flying Cross in World War II.
