Glenn Spencer: Reformer or Racist?

Share

I found particularly striking the juxtaposition of the story about xenophobic Glenn Spencer (“Brash Evangelist,” by Patrick J. McDonnell, July 15) with the story about seeking the source of our human experience of unity (which some people call God). I wonder if Spencer can ever calm his over-stimulated fear and anger to start to understand that we are all, literally, in this together. His efforts to draw the line are wasting his life, his intelligence and his resources.

Whether Spencer realizes it or not, he is a racist. Just look at the evidence. He doesn’t denounce all illegal immigrants--Asians, Canadians, Europeans--but only Mexicans, in incredibly unflattering terms. When you discriminate against a group of people--the Mexican portion of illegal immigration--based on race, it’s racist by definition.

Bravo to Spencer in speaking the truth about what is happening in our once-proud Golden State. Illegal immigration is a subject I have been enraged about for years. In most cases, illegal immigrants do not learn our language and are arrogant enough to think they shouldn’t have to. I can hardly recognize my old neighborhood, where my parents still live. It looks like a Third World country, a little Tijuana. Trash is strewn about and old furniture sits on the parkways. Immigrants like my grandparents were proud to become citizens and learn our language. Now I see nothing but defiance. Glenn Spencer is a hero and a great American. I tip my hat to his cause.

Immigrants come to the U.S. to improve their lives and manage to survive in the process. If Spencer’s grandiose plan of Latino deportation (a.k.a. ethnic cleansing) takes place, exactly who will pick fruits and vegetables, clean homes and offices, mow lawns, revitalize abandoned communities and fulfill all of the other undesirable jobs that the U.S. has to offer? It’s obvious that Spencer abhors the color and culture of Latinos because it contradicts the Anglo-American vision he holds so dear.
