Davis Sets 200 Mark at U.S. Swim Meet

Josh Davis set an American Open swimming record in winning the 200-meter freestyle at the National Championships on Thursday at Clovis, Calif.

Davis, who won the 200 backstroke earlier in the meet, broke the record he set last year with a time of one minute, 47.13 seconds. He won his 10th national title.

Lindsay Benko, who broke her kneecap last month at the World Championships in Japan, rallied in the last 50 meters to win the women’s 200 freestyle with a time of 2:00.16. It was her seventh national title.

Tennis

Marcelo Rios advanced to the quarterfinals of the $800,000 Legg Mason Classic in Washington with a 7-6 (2), 6-3 victory over defending champion Alex Corretja.

Rios’ next opponent will be ninth-seeded Andy Roddick, who reached the quarterfinals for the second consecutive year with a 6-2, 7-5 victory over fifth-seeded Dominik Hrbaty. Top-seeded Andre Agassi defeated 15th-seeded Fernando Vicente of Spain, 6-2, 6-2, in 56 minutes.

Gustavo Kuerten and Marat Safin, the top seeded players in the RCA Championships, advanced to the quarterfinals at Indianapolis, but No. 3 Lleyton Hewitt lost to Younes El Aynaoui.

Eight young American women were given wild-card entries to the main draw of the U.S. Open.

Given entries were Alexandra Stevenson, Allison Bradshaw, Ansley Cargill, Laura Granville, Ashley Harkleroad, Amber Liu, Bethanie Mattek and Sarah Taylor.

Soccer

The New England Revolution sent forward Johnny Torres and midfielder Shaker Asad to the Miami Fusion for defender Leo Cullen and a first-round pick in the 2003 Major League Soccer draft.

In other trades made before the trading deadline, Columbus acquired midfielder Ian Woan from Miami and the rights to forward McKinley Tennyson from the Galaxy for 2002 draft picks.

U.S. forward Brian McBride will miss World Cup qualifiers next month because a blood clot has re-formed in his upper right arm. . . . Colombia’s chances of qualifying for next year’s World Cup were hurt with a 1-0 upset loss to Peru at Bogota. . . . Qatar and Oman each remained unbeaten in World Cup qualifying, playing to a 0-0 draw in Doha, Qatar. . . . David James, England’s goalkeeper, is likely to miss the rest of the World Cup qualifying season after tearing knee ligaments in Wednesday’s 2-0 exhibition loss to the Netherlands.

The Seattle SuperSonics signed center Calvin Booth to a six-year, $34-million contract, his agent said. In his third season, the 6-11 Booth averaged 5.3 points, 4.5 rebounds and two blocked shots for Washington and Dallas.

Florida Atlantic freshman offensive lineman Joshua Blaylock was released from a Boca Raton hospital a day after collapsing at practice.

Right wing Rob Valicevic signed a one-year contract with the Kings. Terms were not announced. Valicevic, 30 and an unrestricted free agent, had eight goals, six assists and 26 penalty minutes in 60 games with Nashville last season. . . . The Colorado Avalanche signed forward Eric Messier, a potential free agent, to a long-term contract. . . . An arbitrator awarded Petr Sykora of the New Jersey Devils a 389% pay raise, from $675,000 to $3.3 million, this coming season as part of the two-year contract.
