Car Bomb Appears to Target Tourists
Spain’s tourism chief, Juan Jose Guemes, urged visitors to be calm after a powerful car bomb exploded in a seaside resort, forcing the evacuation of two hotels in what appeared to be the latest attack by Basque separatists to target tourism.
After the blast in the northeastern resort of Cap de Salou, 13 people, including two Civil Guard officers, were treated for minor cuts and anxiety attacks, police said.
Police said 824 people, including many British and Italian tourists, were rushed out of two hotels and a small apartment block after police received a call just before the 8 a.m. blast warning that a bomb would go off in a nearby parking lot.
Police said the caller claimed to be speaking on behalf of Basque separatists, who have killed more than 800 people since 1968.
