NATO Chief Checks on Truce Before Mission
NATO’s supreme commander in Europe launched a fact-finding mission in Macedonia to determine whether a cease-fire with ethnic Albanian guerrillas is durable enough to allow the deployment of 3,500 troops to collect rebel arms.
U.S. Air Force Gen. Joseph W. Ralston met with NATO officials already in the Balkan country as well as with Macedonian President Boris Trajkovski and other officials.
Ralston said he was gathering facts for a report to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization’s ruling body, which must authorize the full deployment.
“Then it will be up to the nations of NATO as to what to decide,” Ralston said.
