Taking a Bush League Holiday

“How I Spent My Summer Vacation” by George W. Bush:

I live in a big white house in Washington, D.C. I work there, too. Except in the summer. In the summer, I go on vacation to my ranch in Texas. It’s a big ranch, and there are lots of fun things to do there. Sometimes I ride horses. Sometimes I cut wood. And sometimes I watch TV.

The best part is that I don’t have to read. Well, sometimes I have to read. Like when I had to read some stuff about stem cells.

Did you know that it’s OK to experiment on some stem cells but not on others? Neither did I. But now I do.

Sometimes I have to read out loud. This month I had to go on TV and read a speech about stem cells. I had to tell people about which stem cells are OK and which ones are not. It was fun.

But some people were upset by my speech. Some were researchers and some were not but they didn’t understand about OK stem cells and not-OK stem cells. I think they should do some more reading like I did.

On my vacation, I also helped some people build a house. It was called Habitat for Humanity, and it was fun. Some people called it a photo-op. That wasn’t very nice--even if it was true.

I don’t like to work when I’m on vacation. Even when I’m back in Washington in my big white house, I don’t do too much work. I’d like to do more work but my friend Dick Cheney usually does it all first.

I tease Dick. I say, “See Dick. See Dick work. See Dick operate as ‘de facto’ president.”

Dick doesn’t like to take vacations. Some people say that’s not healthy. Most people are thankful and say that’s a very good thing.
