From Times Staff and Wire Reports

A man robbed a Washington Mutual Bank branch Wednesday but fled without the money, police said. The suspect, still at large late Wednesday, abandoned the $2,000 in loot in the bank’s parking lot after a red dye pack included with the money exploded on his way to the getaway car, Westminster Police Sgt. Jack Davidson said.

“He just dropped his loot and fled,” he said.

Davidson said the man entered the bank at Westminster and Beach boulevards about 5 p.m. and demanded money from a teller. “He verbally threatened” that he had a gun, Davidson said, “but none was seen.”

The suspect was described as white, 23 or 24 years old, 5 feet, 9 inches to 5 feet, 11 inches tall, muscular and wearing a hat. He fled in a late-model two-door blue Audi that may have smears of red dye.
