Rebels Kill 2 Children, 1 Soldier at Church
Burundian rebels killed two children and a soldier in an attack on a church in the Central African country, government officials said.
Ethnic Hutu rebels struck early Tuesday morning, tossing grenades and firing at people seeking shelter in a church in Mkondo, near the Tanzanian border in southern Burundi, officials said.
“The rebels looted medicine and clothes belonging to the people, who were taking refuge in the church during the night because it is close to a military position,” local administrator Emmanuel Ndinga said.
He said the attack killed an 11-year-old, a 16-year-old and a soldier and also injured six civilians.
Officials said the raid was carried out by rebel soldiers who crossed from refugee camps in Tanzania.
