Coup Attempt Foiled, Interior Minister Says

Guinea-Bissau’s interior minister, Alamara Nhasse, said local security forces had foiled an attempted coup in the West African country Sunday, the Portuguese news agency Lusa reported.
No more details were immediately available from the tiny former Portuguese colony, which has been rocked by unrest since an army rebellion in 1998. Guinea-Bissau, with a population of about 1.2 million, became independent in 1974.
