Dissidents’ Web Site Shows Grim Side of Island
A group of Cuban economists led by one of the best-known opponents to President Fidel Castro launched a Web site that it said was the first to be run by dissidents from within Cuba.
The Cuban Institute of Independent Economists said the site’s list of local dissident organizations has 132 groups consisting of about 21,000 activists. The site, https://www.cubaicei.org, includes reports on the economy that give a much grimmer vision than the official version, opinion pieces and photos showing the darker side of Cuban society.
The institute’s director, Martha Beatriz Roque, was released from jail last year after nearly three years on charges of inciting sedition.
