Old Casement Windows Can Be Weatherstripped

Question: How can we cut down on drafts coming through poorly installed casement windows?

Answer: Believe it or not, casement windows are better at preventing air infiltration than just about any other style of window.

Sliding windows move in a weatherstripped track. It is impossible for the track to be loose enough for the window to slide freely and at the same time prevent airflow.

Single-hung windows and double-hung windows are different forms of sliding windows, and therefore have the same leak problem.

On the other hand, a casement window closes and latches into a solid secure frame. People who have had both types swear by casements, the only drawback being that the screen is on the inside.

Modern casement window frames are fitted with insulation, all the way around, that easily can be replaced when it wears out. If you have older casements that are not weatherstripped, you might consider having them retrofitted. In this process the frames are made to accept replaceable weatherstrips. Call a couple of local window and/or door companies. They will do the work themselves, recommend a contractor or give you an idea how you can do it yourself.
