A Steamy Insight Into Ancient Italy

Share

ROME--Another steamy corner of ancient Pompeii--a bathhouse decorated with eight erotic paintings--is expected to be opened to the public by Saturday.

Pompeii was buried by ash when Mt. Vesuvius erupted in AD 79, and the archeological site near Naples is one of Italy’s biggest tourist attractions. Much of it is still being excavated. The bathhouse featured a marvel of plumbing for those times: a swimming pool heated to a constant temperature. It also had a sauna room, hot and cold pools and an ancient version of lockers: chests for bathers to store clothes.
