Wisconsin Town Readies New Year’s Fish Shtick

From Times Wire Reports

It’s a Wisconsin twist to a Times Square tradition.

Instead of watching the famous glittering ball drop in New York City as the final seconds of 2001 tick away, people in the western Wisconsin city of Prairie du Chien will get a chance to watch a carp drop.

“It’s tongue-in-cheek, but we’re doing it,” said Cathie Nelson, who brainstormed the idea with her husband, Tom. “New York has the Rockettes. Maybe we’ll have the Carpettes.”

Nelson said the organizing group hasn’t decided if the fish should stay frozen for the drop or be smoked and served as the first appetizer of 2002.
