Saudi King Asks Bush to Help
King Fahd has asked President Bush to exert more effort to achieve peace in the Middle East, the official Saudi Press Agency reported Monday.
The agency said Fahd made the comments in reply to a message from Bush for the Eid al-Fitr feast, which marks the end of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.
“A just and comprehensive peace in the Middle East requires your excellency to shoulder your historic responsibility to achieve peace in accordance with the relevant United Nations resolutions . . . that ensure the rights of all, including the Palestinians’ right to an independent state,” Fahd wrote.
Fahd also reiterated Saudi Arabia’s condemnation of the Sept. 11 attacks and stressed that Islam is a religion of peace, love and tolerance.
The agency said that in his message to Fahd, Bush thanked the monarch for Saudi support for the U.S.-led war on terrorism and assured him that Washington was trying to “achieve a permanent, comprehensive and just peace in the Middle East.”
