President Fires Army Chief Accused of Graft
From Times Wire Reports
President Hugo Chavez has fired the commander in chief of Venezuela’s army, Defense Minister Jose Vicente Rangel said.
Gen. Victor Cruz Weffer has been accused of pocketing public funds while overseeing a $113-million social development program called Plan Bolivar 2000. He denies the charges.
Rangel refused to say why Cruz Weffer was fired. He said the general was replaced by Gen. Efrain Vazquez Velazco, who had been inspector general of the armed forces.
