Proper Exercises for Those With Bad Knees

Share

Question: I used to run three times a week, but my knees have been bothering me. Now I’ve quit exercising, and the weight’s coming on quickly. Are there any exercises appropriate for someone with bad knees?

Answer: Plenty of exercises will keep you in great condition. But first, to be on the safe side, consult with your physician before you jump back into an exercise program. Once you’ve gotten the go-ahead, consider various low-impact aerobic activities such as swimming, stationary cycling, walking or exercising on an elliptical trainer. All of these activities should provide a good workout without placing undue stress on your knees.

You also should head to the weight room for hamstring curls and quadricep extensions, exercises that will strengthen your muscles and improve joint stability. Add stabilization exercises as well. Beginners should try balancing on one leg; the more advanced, on a wobble board.

To prevent damage to your knees:

* Avoid wearing high heels.

* Wear athletic shoes that fit well and are appropriate for your chosen sport or activity.

* Warm up your muscles and joints before exercise.

* Don’t increase the intensity or duration of your workouts too suddenly.

* Stop when you’re tired--risk of injury increases with fatigue.

Stretch your leg muscles after exercise.
