Extradition Sought in Fake Passport Case
Belgian prosecutors said they are seeking the extradition of a man detained in connection with fake passports used by the killers of Afghan opposition leader Ahmed Shah Masoud.
The suspect was detained in the southern Dutch town of Eindhoven on an international arrest warrant issued by Belgian magistrate Christian De Valkeneer, who is leading the investigation into the Masoud case, said Bernard Michielsen of the Brussels state prosecutor’s office.
Michielsen said the man is wanted in Belgium for criminal association and forgery. The man’s name and nationality were not revealed.
Masoud was assassinated just days before the Sept. 11 attacks on New York and Washington by two suicide bombers posing as journalists. The attackers carried Belgian passports.
