Missing Southland Boy, 10, Is Found at Tijuana Shelter
A 10-year-old Huntington Park boy missing for a week was found in Mexico after a Santa Ana resident spotted him in a Tijuana airport, authorities said Thursday.
The woman saw Miguel Angel Jimenez weeping and talking to Mexican police Monday morning, said Huntington Park police Det. Rick Curiel. After she returned home, she recognized the boy on a television news broadcast and called police, Curiel said.
Detectives had difficulty finding Miguel because Mexican government offices were closed for Christmas, Curiel said. After calling several Tijuana shelters on Wednesday, they found one that had taken in a boy named Miguel Angel Rosales.
Despite the discrepancy in the names, Curiel determined he was the missing Southland boy by having a shelter employee check for a scar on his forehead and question him about his family members’ names.
Miguel’s father followed detectives across the border Wednesday afternoon to see his son, who is expected to be released soon.
Police refused to say how the boy ended up in Mexico, saying the matter was still under investigation.
