A former Federal Express driver was sentenced Thursday to six months in jail for stealing holiday packages he was supposed to deliver in the Antelope Valley.

Russell Carnes, 29, of Palmdale, also was sentenced in Lancaster Superior Court to five years’ probation and ordered to pay restitution to the company and/or customers, Deputy Dist. Atty. Rouman Ebrahim said.

“The amount of restitution has yet to be determined because we don’t know how much he stole,” Ebrahim said. “But we want to make sure that everyone is made whole.”

So far, about $16,000 worth of property has been recovered--ranging from golf clubs and sporting goods to laser equipment that was supposed to go to Edwards Air Force Base, Ebrahim said.

Carnes had been stealing packages in October and November and storing them at a relative’s house. The relative got suspicious and called the company, Ebrahim said. The company called the Sheriff’s Department.

On Dec. 26, Carnes pleaded no contest under a plea agreement to one count of grand theft. Under the terms of his probation, Carnes must submit to random searches to determine if he has any stolen items. If he violates probation, Carnes could be sentenced to three years in state prison, Ebrahim said.
