Net Access Crippled After Cable Breaks

Millions of people were unable to access overseas Internet sites after an undersea cable was severed. An official at China Telecom said it could take three weeks to fix the cable.

The break in the cable linking Shanghai to the U.S. West Coast apparently sent reverberations throughout the Asia-Pacific region, with Hong Kong and Singapore reporting reduced online speeds.

Many domestic addresses remained accessible.
